Dries Bonte
Dries Bonte is professor in ecology and evolution at Ghent University. He leads his ‘Spatial Ecology and Evolution’ research group at the Terrestrial Ecology Unit and is editor-in-chief of Oikos – a journal for synthesis in ecology.
His research includes:
- Dispersal and movement ecology
- Evolution in spatially structured environments and its impact on ecological processes
- Plant-arthropod interactions
- Self-organisation of coastal dunes and resilience against climate change
He uses arthropods -and especially arachnids- as a biological model, and combines experimental approaches with modelling to gain a firm understanding on how habitat fragmentation, climate change and urbanisation affect biodiversity at multiple levels of biological organisation.

Wil je wetenschappers helpen bij het meten van spinnen? Download de SpinnenSpotterKaart om thuis af te drukken en hou deze in de foto's die je maakt met de SpinnenSpotter app. Met de meetreferentie en de grijswaarden kunnen we de grootte en kleur van je spin of web-observatie beter bepalen. Je kan de kaart ook bestellen op spinnenspotter@UGent.be. Stuur je adres het aantal kaarten die je nodig hebt en we sturen ze op met de post!
Wanneer je de SpinnenSpotterKaart in de buurt van een spin of een spinnenweb houdt, probeer ervoor te zorgen dat een liniaal en één van de grijswaardenschalen zichtbaar zijn in de afbeelding. Probeer de kaart ook zo dicht mogelijk bij de spin te houden. Je kunt meer lezen over hoe je spinnenfoto's kunt maken op onze info pagina!

Help to measure the Spiders!
With the new SpiderSpotter Data Analysis Tool, you can actively participate in generating scientific data! The online interface fetches spider observations live from the Citizen Science App and offers a range of tools to measure the size and the average colour of the spiders. Simply access the Data Analysis Tool and log in with your App account!
You can even select an option to just work with your observations from the App and export your measured data if you want to do your own analysis.
